I was at my local market and looked into a car and saw an English Bulldog sitting in the back seat with the most expressive eyes I ever saw. I knew that heat was a very real bulldog health problem.
I started talking to the little dog through the open window and he started to wag his butt and then his entire body. He stood on the back seat and came up to the window and licked my finger.
Then I started petting this little guy and since it was a little hot, waited for the owners to come out. After 15 minutes I could feel he was getting pretty warm but the sun was about to go down and the windows were open so I wasn't too worried about him. But in my opinion a dog and especially a puppy should never be left in a car, ever!
I fell in love with this little dog who turned out to be a puppy. He took one of my fingers in his mouth, all the time keeping incredible eye contact, and I noticed that his teeth had just started to break through his gums. What a wonderful dog. I now know why people love English Bulldogs. They are loving and sweet and calm.
The English Bulldog breed has many fans. I'm their newest! These dogs have great personalities, are friendly, and patient with children. However, English Bulldogs are prone to many health problems and one of them is Allergies.
English Bulldogs suffer from some health problems that are also common in other breeds.
The most common health issue shared with many dog breeds is hip dysplasia. Because of the English Bulldog build, this breed often suffers from this crippling condition. As these dogs mature and become older, often weight gain will increase the risk of developing hip dysplasia. Dysplasia means badly formed.
Treatments for hip dysplasia include treating the pain with anti-inflammatory medicines. Put your English Bulldog on a diet for over weight dogs. There are new treatments for this problem including cloning new cells for the joints that have deteriorated.
English Bulldogs are susceptible to difficulty in breathing, especially in heat, after exercising, or when becoming excited. This can lead to a collapsed trachea. A dog can suffocate from this. Don't let your English Bulldog get too excited or overheated (in other words - don't leave him in the car) and don't take this hardy fellow to street fairs where the heat usually much hotter than other areas. Payment gets hot. You've got shoes on but your dog has only skin and it can get so hot that they will blister.
Symptoms of include excessive snoring, extreme sensitivity to heat, gagging or vomiting foam, and difficulty breathing. If your English Bulldog exhibits these symptoms, he should be checked by a vet and remember not all vets are created equal. Some vets go to school and their specialty is avian or reptile. Do you want your Bulldog checked out by a vet who studied bird behavior? I think not! So ask. Don't be afraid to ask about your dog. They are there to make money so if you don't ask questions they will happily treat your dog.
